Community Development

This division facilitates the board’s outreach to Mobile’s neighborhoods. Through the administration of the city’s three Entitlement grants, assistance is provided to low and moderate-income residents and those with special needs. Many of the programs are carried out by community-based nonprofit organizations. Examples of the type of programs assisted include:

  • Youth education
  • Elderly outreach assistance
  • Neighborhood development
  • New affordable home construction
  • Job training/job placement
  • Emergency shelter assistance
  • Tenant-based rental assistance
  • Homeowner counseling

These programs are funded under one or more of the three grant programs the Mobile Housing Board administers on behalf of the City: Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Home Investment Partnership, and Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG).
