Community Services

Mission:

The Community Services Department promotes and provides year-round opportunties for residents in the areas of education, recreation, mentoring and counseling. These programs are designed to improve the quality of life for youth and adults who live in Public Housing Developments (or communities) of the Mobile Housing Board.

The Department administers the Mobile Housing Board's contracts with the following community service agencies that provide various services for its residents:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama
    • Josephine Allen Boys & Girls Club
    • R.V. Taylor Plaza-Optimist Boys & Girls Club
    • Roger Williams Boys & Girls Club
  • Boy Scouts of America, Mobile Area Council
  • Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama, Inc.
  • Police Department (Explorer Scouts Post  401)
  • Via! Senior Citizen Services

Activities sponsored by Community Services include the following:

  • Summer enrichment  programs for youth
  • Basketball tournaments for youth
  • Track and field program participation for youth
  • BayBears (Summer Baseball) Rookie League
  • Tennis for youth and seniors
  • "Stroll & Roll" fitness walks and other special programs for seniors
  • Annual field trips for youth to the Gulf Coast Exploreum and Greater Gulf State Fair 
  • Attendance at major sporting events, including the Gulf Coast Classic, GMAC Bowl and the Senior Bowl
  • Voter registration and education activities
  • Attendance and/or participation in many other arts and cultural events.   

Community Services works closely with the City Wide Residents' Council of the Mobile Housing Board and the resident associations that represent each of the Agency's Public Housing Developments.
