The Downtown Renaissance opens
in HOPE VI Revitalization Area
The Downtown Renaissance - A Senior Housing Residence - is now open.
The 88-unit, three-story complex is located at the corner of Bloodgood and Claiborne streets.
The Downtown Renaissance is a HOPE VI Revitalization Project of the Mobile Housing Board, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City of Mobile, the Alabama Housing Finance Authority and the Federal Home Loan Bank.
The facility is being developed by the Mobile Housing Board and Pennrose Formation Mobile, LLC and is being constructed by Capstone Building Corp. of Birmingham, Ala.
In addition to this complex for seniors, single-family homes are being built in the HOPE VI Revitalization Area. They will replace 787 obsolete apartments that were demolished in the former Albert F. Owens and Jesse Thomas housing developments.
The revitalization project also includes The Renaissance in Church Street East, which consists of nine single-family homes located off Washington Avenue near the main branch of the Mobile Public Library.
Three of the beautiful newly-constructed homes will be sold at market rate, while six others will be sold to families that qualify for housing assistance, including first-time homebuyers.
The homes include one- and two-story homes. They range in size from 1,500 square feet of space to 1,753 square feet of living space. The homes have three bedrooms and two or 2 1/2 bathrooms, walk-in closets, 9-foot ceilings, wood flooring, crown molding, porcelain floor tile, granite counter tops in the kitchens and many other amenities.
In 2004, the Mobile Housing Board received a $20 million HOPE VI Revitalization Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to demolish and replace Owens and Thomas housing developments in the downtown area.
For more information about the new homes, call the Real Estate Department of the Mobile Housing Board at (251) 433-1013 or (251) 434-2205.
